(ESL)-Part-Time Winter 2021 Speaking & Listening (3/2-4/8)

Local students and short-term visitors may take as few or as many courses as they would like up to 16 hours per week. Academic advisement is available upon request. Note: those wishing to be considered for “conditional admission” to Monroe, must enroll in full-time courses.

You will be expected to speak and listen extensively during your academic or professional life. You will listen to lectures, presentations, and classmates while communicating with professors, conducting demonstrations, and participating in class or group discussions. To strengthen your listening and verbal communication skills, you will practice negotiating a variety of verbal communication situations you will face. It will be important to build your vocabulary and ability to listen to identify main ideas, listen for details, and explain. You will learn vocabulary in the context through real-world situations and by practicing exercises from the textbook. As an academic preparation program, research and group projects will make up part of the activities in this course. The course will allow you to work by yourself and with your classmates to complete assignments. You may be expected to meet with group members offline to complete pair or group activities.

Optional 12-hour Assignment: 3-page research and writing assignment that will be discussed by your professor when classes start. This cannot be taken alone. It must be taken in conjunction with the main course.
